History

The Medal for the Defenders and Liberators of Bilbao was conferred upon the forces that participated in the defense of Bilbao, as well as upon the forces that were involved in its release from the Carlist Siege.

The medal that features donkeys on the obverse image, instead of wolves, was manufactured and sold in the area not controlled by Carlists.

The ribbon of the medal features the colours of the Spanish flag when it was awarded to the Liberators of Bilbao.

The ribbon of the medal features the colours yellow-red-yellow when it was awarded to the Defenders of Bilbao.

The ribbon may also be decorated with silver clasps reading, "ONTON 15 DE FEBRERO", "MONTANO 25 DE FEBRERO", "ABANTO 25, 26 Y 27 DE MARZA", "MUNECAS GALDAMES 28, 29 Y 30 ABRIL".
