A circular medal constructed of bronze, the obverse bears two busts with the inscription CAMPANA DE CUBA 1895 -1898, the reverse bears the cipher of of Alfonso XIII (A.XIII) with the inscription EJERCITO EN OPERACIONES, the medal has a laurel wreath around the border, with a crown suspension, on a red and purple striped ribbon.
The Cuba Campaign 1895-1898 Medal was created by Royal Decree on February 1, 1899 to commemorate the performance of the Army and Navy in the Cuba Campaign.
The Cuban Revolution of 1895-1898 was the last of three liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain. Cuba previously fought the Ten Years' War (1868–1878) and the Little War (1879–1880) in attempt to gain independence from Spanish colonial rule. The final three months of the conflict escalated after American intervention and became the Spanish-American War. On August 12, 1898, the United States and Spain signed a protocol of Peace, in which Spain agreed to relinquish all claims of sovereignty over Cuba.
