Physical Description and Item Details


A circular medal constructed of silver with four arms consisting of a fleur de lis, the obverse center bears the inscription ALPENS 9 DE JULIO DE 1876 encompassed by a laurel leaf border, the reverse bears the inscription ADELANTE ESTA ES MI DIVISA CARLOS, with loop suspension on a red and light green ribbon.

History


The medal was conferred upon the participants of the battle of Alpens.

The Battle of Alpens was the first major encounter between the Carlists and the Spanish army. It began on July 9, 1873 when Carlist forces led by Francisco Savalls ambushed a section of the Spanish army led by Jose Cabrinety. Cabrinety was killed in action alongside a majority of his men and the rest were taken prisoner.
