History

The medal was conferred for participation in the Battle of Andoain.

The Battle of Andoain took place on September 14, 1837 during the First Carlist War. The Liberal troops were led by General Leopoldo O'Donnell and had captured Andoain on September 9, which drove the Carlists to the western bank of the river Oria. After two days of sporadic fighting and trench warfare, the Liberals were pelted with heavy artillery. The Liberals were flanked on the left wing and their lines fell apart. Only two British Auxiliary Legion Regiments and local Chapelgorris were left to defend against the Carlists, but were outnumbered. Majority of the British that surrendered were executed by Carlists and locals for committing arson and burning down barns and buildings in the town. Two thirds of the British forces were killed or wounded during and after this battle. The remaining force withdrew to Hernani.
