The medal was conferred in recognition of participation within the Battle of Oriamendi.

The battle of Oriamendi took place on MArch 13, 1837 during the First Carlist War. The battle was a part of the Liberal's spring campaign to rid the Carlists of Basque Country. General Pedro Sarsfield attacked from from Pamplona, General Espartero attacked from from Bilbao and a British-Spanish force under George de Lacy Evans attacked from San Sebastián. On March 15, the British Legion conquered Oriamendi, but the next day the Carlists, led by Sebastian de Borbón, counterattacked and drove the British back.
