History

The Cross for Civilian Prisoners was founded in Spain by Royal Decree of June 4, 1815. It was conferred upon civilians who suffered in prison due to their loyalty to the King and refused to recognize the French government of Napoleon during the Peninsular War.

The Cross features a Latin obverse inscription that translates to "Exile for the King and Fatherland."
