History

This medal was founded by Emperor Franz II to commemorate all the volunteers who mobilized against Napoleon and the French in 1798.

The medal was conferred upon these volunteers from Lower Austria that formed free "Landesstande" corps following the declaration of national emergency in 1797 by the president of Lower Austria, Count Saurau.

The Iron Medal was meant to be conferred upon Soldiers for participation in the campaign against Napoleon, but there is no evidence that this medal was ever produced.
