Physical Description and Item Details

Austria; Silvered war materials, engraver marked "R. PLACHT" on the obverse, 38 mm, four stripes on its original triangular ribbon indicating the recipient received four wounds, traces of silvering remains, near extremely fine.

History

This medal was founded to recognize members of the armed forces that were injured or became seriously ill as a result of their wartime service during World War I.

The ribbon features 1-5 red stripes. The number of red stripes on the ribbon indicates the recipient's number of wounds.

The ribbon had no red stripes when the recipient was invalidated out of active combat due to the severity of their wounds, or due to serious illness.
