Physical Description and Item Details

In Gold and enamels, 31.6mm(w) x 47.6mm(h), superbly made with hand chiseled gold fields and with fine translucent enamels, approximately 1mm thin, and with motto in enameled letters, typical of the circa 1780 period, in excellent condition with minor contact marks, ribbon of circa 1900 period, overall most attractive Austrian Imperial Ladies Order, and very rare from that period.

History

The Order was instituted by Empress Eleanor following a fire which burned the Leopoldine Tract in 1668. However, the fire did not burn the splinters of wood believed to be from the cross of Christ. Due to this mystical phenomenon, the Empress decided to create an Order for noble Austrian ladies. Members of the Order devoted themselves to living virtuously through acts of charity and devotion to religion.

The 'Starry Cross' refers to a constellation called the Crux or Southern Cross of the South Pole. It cannot be seen from Europe. The principal and patron has always been the reigning Empress or Archduchess.

There is only one class. Candidates had to prove their noble ancestry and be of Roman Catholic faith. There is no limit to the number of members.

The insignia bears a golden cross with blue enamel, with a thin interior cross in red enamel. The cross is overlaid on a golden imperial eagle with black enamel, surrounded by a blue band with a white enamel device where the motto "SALUS ET GLORIA" (meaning salvation and glory) was placed. This order was worn on a black bow.

By 1895, there were 57 Ladies from 'ruling house' alon with 844 'Aristocratic' members. By the end of 1917, there were 84 from the previously mentioned 'ruling house' and 815 from the latter.

Due to the long lifespan of this order, there are numerous variations. There were also decorations 'in diamonds.' Some may have the letters "I H S V" inscribed meaning "in hoc signo vinces - in this sign you will conquer." The official manufacturer of the 19th century was C.F Rothe.
