Physical Description and Item Details


(Goldene Verdienstmedaille). A large round gilt bronze medal; the obverse depicting an Austrian eagle, surrounded by the Coat of Arms of Austria’s nine states; the reverse inscribed “Für Verdienste um die Republic Österreich” (For Merit for the Republic of Austria); on a loop for suspension from its period original ribbon; 45.03 mm in diameter; weighing 39.7 grams; in overall extremely fine condition.

History


This decoration was founded by the National Assembly and it is the highest award conferred within the Republic of Austria.

It is conferred upon foreign and national citizens for distinguished service and exemplary achievements within the Republic of Austria that have created a positive public impact.

The recipients are chosen by the government, and the awards are conferred by the President of Austria.

The President of Austria is always awarded the Grand Star of the Order for life following their appointment to the office.

When the medal is awarded to a woman it is worn on a bow ribbon.
