Physical Description and Item Details


1930-1934 Issue. (Verdienstmedaille). A large circular medal constructed of silvered bronze; the obverse depicting the Austrian coat of arms, surrounded by the coat of arms of all of Austria’s nine provinces; the reverse inscribed “Für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich” (For merit for the Republic of Austria); on a triple loop suspension from its period original tri-fold ribbon; measuring 45.02 mm in diameter; weighing 32.6 grams; in overall extremely fine condition.

History


This decoration was founded by the National Assembly and it is the highest award conferred within the Republic of Austria.

It is conferred upon foreign and national citizens for distinguished service and exemplary achievements within the Republic of Austria that have created a positive public impact.

The recipients are chosen by the government, and the awards are conferred by the President of Austria.

The President of Austria is always awarded the Grand Star of the Order for life following their appointment to the office.

When the medal is awarded to a woman it is worn on a bow ribbon.
