Physical Description and Item Details


Austria, First Republic. A Military Merit Cross, First Class, c.1935

(Militärverdienstkreuz I Klasse). A silver Latin cross with red and white enameled arms, with a gilt laurel wreath between the arms of the cross; the obverse with a white enameled medallion decorated by a gilt Austrian double-headed eagle, surrounded by a red ring of enamels; the reverse plain, with a vertical pinback and a functional hinge/catch assembly; an unmarked example; measuring 69.10 mm (w) x 69.16 mm (h); weighing 106 grams; in extremely fine condition.

History


This cross was awarded to Officers and enlisted men in the Austrian Armed forces in recognition of meritorious service.

The award was only awarded for 4 years, and it was suppressed following the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938.

The obverse features the image in gilt of the double-headed Austrian eagle.

The I Class Cross features a gilt wreath between the cross arms.
