The medal is conferred for successfully completing their mandatory training within the Military of the Republic of Austria.

The Gold Medal is awarded to individuals who were already recipients of the Silver Medal, and have performed 60 more days of Military training or duty.

The Gold Medal was added as a grade on June 28, 1989.
