History

The Cross for the Occupation of the Rhineland is an unofficial award that was awarded to members of the Belgian Armed Forces who were stationed in the Rhineland as part of the Allied occupation following the First and Second World War.

There are two versions of the Gold Medal which differ in the dates inscribed on the obverse. The first version has “1918-1929” in the obverse inscription, and was awarded following the withdrawal of Belgian forces from the region in 1929. The second version has both “1918-1929” and “1945” in the obverse inscription. Both versions feature an additional obverse inscription translates to “Watching the Rhine.”
