The King Albert Medal was awarded to Belgian citizens and foreigners in recognition of extraordinary humanitarianism, charity, and devotion to Belgians in need during the First World War.

The Bronze Medal (for Humanitarian Assistance) was awarded on a dark red ribbon with three thin stripes of black, yellow, and red down the centre of the ribbon, and the Bronze Medal (for Loyalty) was awarded on a dark red ribbon with two sets of three thin stripes of black, yellow, and red.

The obverse inscription in translates to "Albert King of the Belgians," and the reverse inscription translates to "In Testimony of National Gratitude." Depending on the choice of the recipient, the medal could be inscribed in French or Dutch.
