History


The China Expedition Medal was created by the decree of January 23, 1861 and was awarded to all those who participated in the Expedition from 1857-1860. An estimated 18700 Medals were produced by the Monnaie de Paris in 1861.

The obverse inscription translates to “Napoleon III Emperor,” and the reverse inscription translates to “China Expedition 1860, Ta-kou, Chang-Kiawan, Pa-Li-Kao, Pe-King.” The ribbon has “PE-KING” in Chinese characters embroidered in blue thread.
