The Medal of Distinction for Sailors and Navigators was created by Louis XIV in 1692. It was awarded for courage, and devotion to the Navy.
The Medal has two versions. The first version was struck in 1692 and depicts Louis XIV extending the crown of Neptune to a kneeling sailor. The second version was struck in 1693 and depicts Louis XIV extending a medal to a kneeling sailor.
The obverse inscription translates to “Louis the Great, Christian King,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Reward for Naval Courage and Ability.”
