History

The Saint Helena Medal was created by Napoleon III on August 12, 1857 and was awarded to all those who fought in under the French flag during the Revolution and First Empire (1792-1815). An estimated 350 000 Medals were awarded to French nationals, and another 55 000 to foreigners.

The obverse inscription translates to “Napoleon I Emperor,” and the reverse inscription translates to “Campaigns of 1792 to 1815, To His Companions In Glory, His Last Thought, St. Helena May 5, 1821.”

There are versions which vary in size and composition. It is probable that versions that vary in composition were altered after they were awarded, and not as any official production.
