History

The Military Medal was created on January 22, 1852 by Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte. It's creation was motivated by a need to restore equality to military decorations in France due to the Legion of Honour had become a decoration just for Officers, and the Veteran’s Medal (Medal of the Two Swords) was discontinued.

The Medal was awarded in recognition of military personnel who displayed meritorious service and acts of bravery in battle. It was awarded to all the branches of the French army forces. The French military campaigns in the second half of the nineteenth century quickly established the prestige the Military Medal.

Currently, it is second only to the Order of the Legion of Honour in the modern order of precedence. It is awarded to Non-Commissioned Officers, Corporals, Brigadiers, soldiers and sailors for long service and acts of bravery.

There are several versions of this Medal. The following variables may be encountered: size; composition; manufacturer.

The Military Medal is translated from the French "Medaille Militaire".
