History

The Medal of Honour for Epidemics was created on March 31, 1885, and was later discontinued in 1962.

The Medal was awarded to those who were particularly dedicated to fighting disease in periods of epidemics. This included risking infection to care for the sick, protecting a group from infection, or contributing to operations of disinfection.

The Medal was awarded by many ministries including the Ministry of Commerce (MINISTÈRE DU COMMERCE), the Ministry of Hygiene (MINISTÈRE DE L’HYGIÈNE), the Ministry of Public Health (MINISTÈRE DE LA SANTÉ PUBLIQUE), the Ministry of the Interior (MINISTÈRE DE L’INTÉRIEUR), the Ministry of War (MINISTÈRE DE LA GUERRE), the Ministry of the Navy (MINISTÈRE DE LA MARINE), the Ministry of Colonies (MINISTÈRE DES COLONIES), and the Ministry of Overseas France (MINISTÈRE DE LA FRANCE D’OUTRE-MER). As a result, there are many versions of the medal.

The Medal is listed in the Third Republic, the Fourth Republic, and the Fifth Republic.
