History

The Medal of Honour for Firefighters was created in 1900, and is awarded both for long service and exceptional acts of courage and bravery in the line of duty.

The Medal is divided into Types. Type I includes the awards granted for long service, while Type II includes the awards granted for courage and bravery.

In Type II, the Medal is awarded in two separate grades. The Silver Medal with rosette was introduced in 1922, and the Gilt Medal with rosette was introduced in 1962. The Gilt Medal with rosette could be awarded after 5 years of receiving the Silver Medal with rosette.

The Medal also has two different versions. The first is identical to the second version of the Medal for long service. The second version has an obverse inscription that translates to “Ministry of the Interior,” and the reverse has initials that correspond to “French Republic.”

There may be versions of the Medal that vary in size, composition, or manufacturer.
