History

The Medal of Honour for the Merchant Navy is awarded to members of the Merchant Navy for 300 months (25 years) of service. It may be awarded in absence of this service requirement for exceptional acts of courage and bravery. 300 Medals are awarded annually.

There are three versions of the medal which vary in engraving. The first version has an obverse inscription that translates to “French Republic,” and a reverse inscription that translates to “Merchant Navy, Honour at Work.” Both the second and third versions have an obverse inscription that translates to “Merchant Navy,” and a reverse inscription that translates to “Medal of Honour.”

There may be additional versions that vary in composition.
