History

The Colonial Medal was created on July 26, 1893. Approximately one million medals were awarded from its inception to 1962 when it was replaced by the Overseas Medal. It was awarded for participation in military campaigns in French colonies or protectorates.

The Medal is classified into three types according to the time period in which it was awarded. Type I Medals, awarded from 1893-1913, have biface suspensions and hallmarks stamped on the rim. Type II Medals, awarded from 1914-1962, have uniface suspensions and hallmarks stamped on the reverse. Type III Medals, were manufactured in Indochina during the Vichy Government from 1940-1944 and also differ in inscription. It should be noted that an “intermediate” version manufactured in 1913 may be encountered that has a Type I medal and a Type II suspender.

Type I Medals have medals manufactured by the Monnaie de Paris and suspensions that could be manufactured by private firms. Type II Medals were officially manufactured entirely by the Monnaie de Paris, however there are many unofficial versions of the Type II Medal. The following variables may be encountered on unofficial versions: size; composition; manufacturer; engraving; biface or uniface medal; suspension.

The campaigns were represented on clasps. There was no limit on the number of clasps that could be worn on the ribbon. These clasps are numerous and extremely variable. They were manufactured by the Monnaie de Paris, as well as private firms including Arthus-Bertrand, Marie Aubert, Delande, Lemaître, Lasne-Bacqueville, Chobillon, Mourgeon, Mercier, Roux, and Salat.
