Physical Description

A circular medal constructed of gold. The obverse bears the bust of Grand Duke Leopold partially encompassed by the inscription "LEOPOLD GROSHERZOG V. BADEN". The reverse bear the image of Pallas Athena holding a lance in one hand with the beginnings of an olive tree growing upwards, and a shield and an owl on the other side. With the inscription "FÜR KUNST UND WISSENSCHAFT" (for art and science) on the reverse. Measuring 48 mm in diameter and weighing 71 grams.

History

The Medal for Art and Science was established by Grand Duke Leopold in 1848. It was awarded in recognition of exemplary service in the fields of art and science. The medal could not be sought out by individuals, but suggestions from authorities were permitted. The Medal for Art and Science was nonreturnable. Originally, there was no certificate issued alongside the medal. By 1855, five gold medals and one silver medal had been awarded. In 1857, names were first published in the official gazette.

The Type I Medal was awarded from 1848 to 1855. It features the portrait of Grand Duke Leopold on the obverse. It was awarded in gold and silver.
