History

The Medal for Art and Science was established by Grand Duke Leopold in 1848. It was awarded in recognition of exemplary service in the fields of art and science. The medal could not be sought out by individuals, but suggestions from authorities were permitted. The Medal for Art and Science was nonreturnable. Originally, there was no certificate issued alongside the medal. By 1855, five gold medals and one silver medal had been awarded. In 1857, names were first published in the official gazette.

In 1857, the Medal for Art and Science Type II was introduced and featured the portrait of a young Grand Duke Friedrich with a moustache. It was awarded in gold and silver from 1857 to 1869. In 1873, the Type II medal featured the portrait of Grand Duke Friedrich with a beard and it was awarded in gold and silver. The medal was stamped until 1902 when the unstamped medal was introduced. The unstamped Type II medal with the bearded portrait of Grand Duke Friedrich was awarded from 1902 to 1908.
