Physical Description


A circular medal constructed of silver. The obverse features the bust of grand Duke Friedrich II with a moustache and in uniform, encompassed by the inscription "FRIEDRICH II GROSSHERZOG VON BADEN". The reverse features a laurel wreath with the inscription "FÜR KUNST UND WISSENSCHAFT" (for art and science) with a small star under the inscription. The silver medal was awarded on a green ribbon with yellow stripes.

History


The Medal for Art and Science was established by Grand Duke Leopold in 1848. It was awarded in recognition of exemplary service in the fields of art and science. The medal could not be sought out by individuals, but suggestions from authorities were permitted. The Medal for Art and Science was nonreturnable. Originally, there was no certificate issued alongside the medal. By 1855, five gold medals and one silver medal had been awarded. In 1857, names were first published in the official gazette.

The Medal for Art and Science, Type III was awarded from 1908 to 1918. The Type III medal was awarded in gold and silver. It featured the bust of Grand Duke Friedrich II with a moustache and uniform.
