The Medal for Art and Science was established by Grand Duke Leopold in 1848. It was awarded in recognition of exemplary service in the fields of art and science. The medal could not be sought out by individuals, but suggestions from authorities were permitted. The Medal for Art and Science was nonreturnable. Originally, there was no certificate issued alongside the medal. By 1855, five gold medals and one silver medal had been awarded. In 1857, names began being published in the official gazette.

The Medal for Art and Science, Type III was awarded from 1908 to 1918. The Type III medal was awarded in gold and silver. It featured the bust of Grand Duke Friedrich II with a moustache and uniform. Minted in the Karlsruhe Mint.

The medal is stamped "R.M." for Rudolf Mayer.
