The Medal was established by Prince Regent Luitpold to commemorate the 70th anniversary of his joining the army.

The Medal was awarded to all active Officers and Soldiers, Officers of the reserve army and holders of the Gold and Silver Military Merit Medals.

In 1911/1912, the Decoration was expanded to include Bavarian nationals serving outside of the Bavarian armed forces.

Around twenty-two thousand medals were struck at the Bavarian Mint.
