History

The Luitpold Medal was established by Prince Regent Luitpold on March 12, 1897. The medal was conferred upon veterans, soldiers, and veteran associations who had served for 50 years, and who belonged to the same military unit for ten years without interruption. Medals were awarded on the birthday of the Prince Regent and carried on the association's flag or standard. If the association was dissolved or disbanded the medal had to be returned to the Ministry of the Interior.
