Physical Description

A circular medal constructed of bronze. The obverse bears the bust of Crown Prince Rupprecht encompassed by the inscription "IN TREUE FEST" (in steadfast loyalty). The reverse bears the coat of arms of Bavaria on a background of lozenges, encompassed by a border with the inscription "ZUR BEFREIUNG DER PFALZ 1.12.1918 30.6.1930" (for the liberation of Palatine). On a loop for suspension.

History

The Pfalz Medal was established by Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria on June 30, 1930. The medal was conferred upon members of the Palatinate Warrior Association for meritorious or distinguished service during the occupation of the Palatinate during World War I. It was also conferred upon members who distinguished themselves during the separatist’s movements from 1923 to 1924.

The medal was only awarded to non-members in extraordinary cases. There were approximately 500 medals awarded.

The medal was designed by Professor Theodor Georgii.
