History

The Order was established by King Ludwig III and was awarded to Medical Officers who during times of war, whether on the battlefield or in hospitals, risked their lives to care for sick and wounded.

This is the only German award which was created specifically for physicians of the Officer rank during the First World War.

The Order could also be conferred upon non-Bavarian physicians.

The I Class Medal was only awarded 11 times.
