Physical Description


An ovular medal constructed of silver gilt. The obverse bears the bust of the duke encompassed by the inscription "CAROLVS D G DVX BRVNSVIG ET LVNEBVRG", within a border of laurel leaves. The reverse bears a horse within an ovular border topped with a crown. The border is inscribed "DEM VERDIENST IN KUNST VND WISSENSCHAFT". On a loop for suspension.

History


The Decoration for Art and Science was founded on April 25, 1908 by Duke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg, while he was acting as Regent of Brunswick. The decoration was conferred upon individuals in recognition of their achievements in the realms of art and science.
