History

The Order was founded by Duke Wilhelm of Brunswick and was conferred upon individuals who distinguished themselves by rending meritorious military or civil service. Civil service included outstanding work in the fields of Art and Science.

The conferral of an Award was not dependent on an individual’s class or rank.

During the Franco-German War in 1870, crossed swords were added to all war merit awards.

This Order was conferred from 1834 to 1918.

I Class and II Class Commanders wear the same Cross. The only difference is that I Class Commanders additionally wear the Commander Breast Star.
