A pointed cross with an arch on the arms, Gothic decorations, and a raised edge, constructed of copper bronze. The obverse features the inscription ‘FÜR’ (12 o’clock) ‘PFLEGE DER SOLDATEN’ (9 o’clock through 3 o’clock) ‘1914’ (6 o’clock) on the arms (for tending to the soldiers). The reverse features a crowned monogram ‘L’ in the centre and the inscription ‘DEN’ (12 o’clock) ‘25TEN’ (9 o’clock) ‘AUGUST’ (3 o’clock) ‘1870’ (6 o’clock) on the arms (August 25th, 1870). On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon with narrow silver side stripes. Military personnel received the decoration on a light blue ribbon with broad red side stripes.
The Cross for Medical Workers was originally founded by Grand Duke Ludwig III, but it was renewed by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig on August 12, 1914.
The Type II Cross was conferred upon individuals, regardless of class or gender, who rendered exemplary service in the care and transportation of sick and wounded soldiers during the First World War.
Medical Officers, Officers, and lower ranked soldiers received the cross on a war ribbon, all others received the cross on a ribbon similar to the 1870 Type I Cross.
As the war progressed and materials became scarce, manufacturers began producing crosses composed of coppered war material.
