A circular medal with a raised border, constructed of bronze. The obverse features the crowned monogram ‘WK’. The reverse features a wreath of oak leaves, tied at the bottom by a ribbon, with the inscription ‘DEM VERDIENSTE UM DEN STAAT’ in the centre (‘for merit to the state’). On a loop for suspension, on a red ribbon.
The Civil Merit Medal was founded by Elector Wilhelm II and was conferred in recognition of civil merit.
The medal was conferred upon low-ranking court and civil servants who rendered long and faithful service within a variety of fields, which benefited the citizens of Hesse-Kassel. It could also be conferred for demonstrating bravery when faced with danger.
The medal was awarded from 1821 until 1832, when it was replaced by the Civil Merit Cross.
The Bronze Medal is a non-official grade and it was privately manufactured.
