History

The Merit Medal was originally established by Prince Paul Friedrich Emil Leopold of Lippe and Prince Adolf Georg von Schaumburg-Lippe, and was renewed by Prince Woldemar in 1888. The award was conferred upon individuals who rendered distinguished services that benefitted both the prince and the principality.

Civilians and military personnel were eligible to receive the decoration.

From 1906 to 1908, golden crossed swords were awarded to members of German East Africa Schutztruppe who demonstrated bravery in the face of the enemy.

The Medal was discontinued in 1918.

The word "VERDIENST" in the obverse inscription of the Gold Medal (1905-1918) slightly overlaps the encircling laurel wreath.
