History

The Order was established by Prince Leopold IV to reward women who performed commendable work, which benefited society and the Principality of Lippe.

Generally, the Award was conferred upon young women, who worked for the church and helped improve the social welfare of the less-fortunate. The Order could also be conferred to numerous years of faithful service, or to recognize outstanding individual achievements.

The Merit Cross was worn on a bow ribbon.
