The Merit Medal was founded by Prince Adolf Georg of Schaumburg-Lippe and Prince Paul Friedrich Emil Leopold of Lippe, and was conferred upon individuals who rendered meritorious services to Princely House.

The Type VI medals were instituted on February 23, 1914, and do not feature a surmounting crown. These medals feature the portrait of Prince Adolf of Lippe-Schaumburg on the obverse.
