History


The Civil Merit Medal was originally instituted by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz in 1798, and was conferred in recognition of meritorious service rendered to the Grand Duke and the state.

The Type IV medals were issued under Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II and feature his portrait on the obverse.

Men wore the medal as a neck decoration and women wore the medal on a bow ribbon.
