History

The Medal was founded by Grand Duke Paul Friedrich and was conferred upon individuals who served in the Rheinbund-Kontignent from 1808 to 1812. It was also awarded to soldiers who served in the Kontingent from 1812-1815, regardless of whether they ever saw battle. The Rheinbund-Kontingent fought in the Napoleonic Wars.

The name of the recipient may be featured on the rim of the medal.
