The Medal was originally founded by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz and was conferred in recognition of outstanding achievements in the areas of the art and science.
On February 28, 1859, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II created statues for the Medal.
In 1900, it was determined that the Silver Medal could also be worn on a ribbon from around the neck. Women wore the decoration on a bow ribbon.
The Type II Medals feature a right facing portrait of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz.
