The Cross was originally founded by Grand Duke Georg on July 1, 1846, and was conferred upon Officers and high-ranking military officials who had had long and illustrious military careers.
The Type III Crosses were renewed by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich on July 25, 1913, and the conferral years were changed for the second time.
The Bronze Cross for 12 Years was conferred upon Non-Commissioned Officers.
