History
The Merit Medal was instituted by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V, and it was conferred upon individuals that had provided exemplary service and loyalty to the Grand Ducal House and Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
The medal could also be awarded to recognise exemplary acts of merit and merit within labour.
The Bronze Medal was awarded to low-ranking servants, labourers, and officials within the court of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, as well as individuals within the courts of allied houses.
The Bronze Medal could also be conferred in recognition of 40 and 50 years of faithful labour within a specific service.
The Type II medals were renewed on January 1, 1915 by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich VI and they were altered to incorporate his portrait on the obverse.
