This is a very rare award. There were only six Type II Gold Medals awarded to citizens of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.

History

The Merit Medal was instituted by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V and was conferred upon individuals who had rendered exceptional service that benefited not only the Grand Ducal House, but the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz as a whole. It could also be conferred in recognition of praiseworthy deeds and merit in the workplace.

The Gold Medal was awarded to officers and high-ranking civilian employees.

The Type II medals were renewed on January 1, 1915 by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich VI and they were altered to incorporate his portrait on the obverse.
