The Nassau Commemorative Medal was instituted by Grand Duchess Maria Anna on December 26th, 1909, to commemorate the newly dedicated monument to the late Duke Adolph of Nassau.

The medal was conferred upon non-commissioned officers and enlisted men. It was also awarded to nobility who attended the unveiling of the monument and contributed to its procurement.
