History

The Cross was instituted by Prince Heinrich XX (Senior Line) and was conferred upon court officials and servants who rendered long and faithful service to the Royal House.

The II Class Silver Cross was awarded to individuals who had performed many years of meritorious work within churches, schools, or the public service.

In 1902, the name of the Cross was changed to the "Merit Cross."

The Senior Line crosses were worn on a dark blue ribbon, two large red stripes along each exterior edge.
