The Gold Medal was instituted by Prince Heinrich XXII (Senior Line) and was conferred for outstanding civil merit.
The decoration was likely awarded on a dark blue ribbon, with red stripes on each exterior edge. If the Medal was conferred for life saving efforts, it was conferred on the Life Saving Ribbon, which featured a black, red and white stripe.
