The Campaign Medal for 1849 was founded by Duke Ernst I on August 31, 1913. The Medal was conferred upon all military personnel who participated in the Danish-German War and rendered exceptional service during critical events such as the storming of Dybbøl Hill on April 13, 1849.
The Medal was awarded to Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers, military doctors, and enlisted ranks of the Altenburger contingent.
