History

The Decoration for Art and Science was originally founded as the Medal for Civil Merit, which was primarily awarded to artists. The medal was established in three grades: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. Both wearable and non-wearable medals were issued.

The Type IV decoration was redesigned by Duke Alfred on October 19, 1894.

The new Type IV decorations took the form of a cross and a medal. This decoration was the highest level of award conferred in recognition of extraordinary merits and achievements within the arts and sciences.
