The decoration was originally founded by Duke Ernst I as a Medal for Civil Merit, but after 1837 the decorations were awarded more broadly in recognition of meritorious achievements in civil life.
The Type V decoration was redesigned by Duke Card Edward in 1905.
The new Type V decorations took the form of a cross and a medal. This decoration was the highest level of award conferred in recognition of extraordinary merits and achievements within the arts and sciences.
This Cross was worn on a ribbon.
