History

The Duke Carl Eduard Medal, Type I was instituted by Duke Carl Eduard of Saxony-Coburg and Gotha on August 6, 1905. It was awarded for those services that were not covered by the Saxe-Ernestine House Order Medals or the Medals for Art and Science.
The medal was awarded with an accompanying document. No rank or class distinctions were made between the large and the small version. The medal had to be returned upon the recipient’s death.

The medal was awarded as a neck or buttonhole decoration. The duke reserved the right to award a version in gold in special cases, however, this never occurred.

The stamps were cut by Max von Kawaczynski, for which he received the 2nd Class Medal of the Saxe-Ernestine House Order.
The medal was manufactured by L. Chr. Lauer in Nuremberg.
